This week, we brought up the topic of treating others with respect.

G rowing up, I have been always been taught the value that In order to be respected, you have to give it. There has been numerous occasions in my life that I haven’t followed this value, especially towards family members and after that instance it is extremely hurtful and put some heaviness in my heart about it. But as far as treating others with respect, something as a nice compliment about a person or just a comment about some-thing positive in their life is a nice gesture towards making that relationship respect-able. Additionally, if that person needs their space, respect it. I couldn’t count off my hand the numerous occasions that I wish others would walk away or give me space so that I could calm down and tone out the irritable issues that would prohibit me from aggressively verbally attacking the other person. Sometimes, I am given prompts to walk away, but I don’t until it’s the absolute last minute. I know I person-ally because of my diagnoses need to be aware of when I need to step back and realize the need to cool down before I treat another person disrespectfully. Lastly, back to that simple saying that many have been taught when growing up is that respect is EARNED and is NOT A GIVEN.
