Throughout life, I have learned that autism is just what it is. But there are many different when I am not always the most considerate or say the nicest things. Sometimes I put my own needs above those of others, especially when they need what they want for themselves. It seems like I am being selfish. My stares or gestures can be frustrating to the people I am with. They need their own needs met too.
Autistic people often feel as if their needs take precedence over those of someone else. There have been times when I felt easily frustrated. My needs were not met, or I was not at my best comfort level. During these times, I did not see that I needed to be considerate of others that are with me. Even though I do not want to do something, there can be moments when it’s too much for me. I do not always recognize these moments. During these times, it is best for those that are with me to do what is needed for them. At that moment, it is best for them to do what they want to do.
I must catch myself when focusing on what I want and need to get done. It requires being considerate of others. This is especially true when the opportunity arises for them to have the time they need to care for themselves. It takes patience and understanding. I need to support their choices, even when it frustrates me. Sometimes, their needs are prioritized over what they want to do. This helps those who help them.
It is not like those that are with me are asking me to do something that is overly complicated. It means being there for them. Let them experience life a little more, especially when they do not have the opportunity to do things otherwise. It can seem more complicated when it does not have to be. We need to understand that they often give in to our needs. We should reciprocate to them, so they can enjoy a little bit of freedom.
We need to be more flexible. We should not let our oversensitivity affect us. It is important to avoid being noticed for not conducting we as needed. We as autistic people can do things. We can achieve our goals if we put our mind to it. Sometimes, it includes being brave and doing what is needed for others. We support them in the ways they need. This support requires us to step outside of our comfort zone.
It can be hard for us to step outside of our comfort zones. Yet, there can be a sense of pride from those who love and care for us. This happens when we make life easier for them. It allows them to do what they need to do. This is especially true when they lack the opportunity otherwise. It can be frustrating at the moment. Sometimes, we need to catch ourselves and do what is necessary. This helps us cope with moments when others need to do what they need to do. It allows them to enjoy themselves in their own moment. They can be themselves when they otherwise do not have the opportunity.
You must be your best, even when you don’t want to be. This is because you are doing what is best for those that support you when you need them. It is returning the favor. As hard as it can be, sometimes it is needed for them to better support you in the future.
