Over the past few months, I have been working on improving my mental wellbeing. It has been a tremendous help by learning, understanding, and documenting what works for me in times that I become dysregulated. Being able to have tools that help me decipher what is best for me and how they work has been crucial in aiding me get my life on track.

Part of getting mentally well is understanding that you have to do the work in solving problems when they arise as a result of being dysregulated. There can be a desire to do the status quo and just sulk into a pity party. That has been my approach for an exceptionally long time, and  I was tired of it. There was the reality that as I was living independently, my parents were not always going to be there to solve the problem for me and when I was having barriers with my emotional state, it was up to me to discover what was wrong and work to find a way to cope with the challenges in the method that worked best for me.

It has been some trial and error over the past few months, but I have discovered that there have been things that I have found to be quite beneficial to my wellbeing and get me back on the course that I needed to be on when times were not more challenging.

There is also having the ability to be more flexible and improvising when it becomes necessary because unfortunately not everything goes according to plan or always works in the way that we expect it to. It is learning to work beyond what we want to believe has to work and working on better solutions that are equally as valuable as what we are used to.

The world is challenging for the autistic person no matter how much protection or support that they have. It is crucial to find the skills, tools and mechanisms that are necessary for the autistic person to be able to redirect and work at winding down from being dysregulated. It can be challenging when an autistic individual is dysregulated and sometimes it takes thinking instantly and outside the box to find the necessary solutions for them to be regulated in the way that is necessary for quality living.

But knowing what helps me when I am at the moments when I cannot get settled can be so relieving and rewarding because eventually I feel so much better because my brain is more at ease and I can do what I know I can do without any issues, Having the tools and knowledge at my disposal has gone a long way in preventing dysregulation in the long term that has seen itself pay off in dividends by allow myself to have more time to be a better self.

In the end it is finding things that work for me and that I am actually going to use in the times that I know that I am dysregulated. Then if they do work, it is better to take the time that I need to care for myself for an extended period of time. It is important to make sure that I am my priority today and always.
