I have been feeling inclined as there has been some connection in understanding the necessity of sleep for myself to continue the sleep series regarding sleep by adding to the series about understanding the need to make sure that I have enough sleep along with fighting drowsiness because of sleep balance.
It was not until last year that I started to realize that I not only needed to sleep, but I also needed to have a significant amount of sleep to function throughout the day successfully. Doing so provides a better ability for regulation and a less chance for irritability in myself. I know when I do not have an adequate amount of sleep, I am more prone to become irritable or act in a different way towards others that could result in reacting negatively towards others.
There are instances where I understand that if I take extra time to care for myself that I need to take some time to sleep. It is not always possible during the week to get the full amount of sleep because my anxiety will cause me to get up many times before the morning alarm sounds, therefore it may be necessary to get some extra sleep on weekends. This may be additionally necessary when there are times on the weekends where I will need to get up early for necessary engagements. Therefore, as I often try to schedule some self-care time on the weekends, I try to make up some time by getting extra sleep. It may seem small or silly, but it goes a long way in catching up my mental wellbeing.
During the week there may be a necessity when heading out into environments where there I experience more sensory overload that I am accustomed to or having to exert an excessive amount of energy that I will need to have to nap when I come home from being out. I try to always reach for napping around an hour to not over nap.
One of the hardest things to do as I work to get moving, once I do awake myself is avoiding the desire to want to go back to sleep. Because of how necessary sleep can be, there can be a surmountable amount of drowsiness that accompanies the sleep, and it can be hard to get into focus into doing what I need to do. It can be hard to navigate into doing what I need to do to complete what is needed to be done in the day before heading out or following through with an engagement.
Once, I am well-rested and able to fight the drowsiness that I am experiencing, I understand that it is important to not fall susceptible to falling asleep again as too much sleep can be just as a culprit of not having enough sleep. It is a delicate balance to get enough sleep. There is the bare minimum which can be best survived, but if the sleep is fragmented because of various reasons, which can set you back further in getting the sleep that you need, therefore the necessity of having to catching up is paramount.
I used to be angry about needing to sleep, but I now realize that it is important to have a good balance of sleep to be able to navigate a life that is more challenging than it is for those that do not have the challenges that I do. It can be frustrating to get to sleep, then when you do not have enough sleep you can tell, but having enough sleep and fighting the drowsiness to do the things you need to do to be well is extremely important to maintain a successful well-being.
