Over the last several years of living on my own, I have developed habits. These habits help me make the best of my days. They motivate me to keep going, even when it seems like I lack the energy. Here are some key takeaways. They have helped me keep momentum throughout the day.

1. Take your medication as prescribed and scheduled.

This should be a no-brainer. I have lived several years without adhering to my mental health meds due to flawed beliefs. During this time, I learned something. It is important to have a regimented schedule of when you take your medicine. This helps them work the best way that they can for you.

2. Let the Sunshine In.

Open the drapes when and where you can. This helps your brain know that it is daylight. You can then get some daylight and sky, which can boost your mental health and brain activity. I set a reminder in my smart speakers. This helps me remember to close the curtains at night. I do this by scheduling it for sunset. This can go a long way in making a good day go great.

3. Try to Stay Awake as Much As possible

Again, another no brainer. You shouldn’t sleep your day away. You also shouldn’t sleep at random for hours on end. There will be times when recovering that small amount of sleep will be essential for your mental well-being. Yet, it shouldn’t be an all day thing.

4. Make the Bed as Soon as Possible

This will help guarantee that you will stay out of bed. It will also keep you engaged with the world around you along with the above step. Research shows that it is the first thing you achieve in the morning. It makes you feel productive and proud of yourself.

5. Sit Outside for a Little Bit.

It can be hard to do sometimes. But it is important to sit outside on the days that you can. Just take in the world around you for a few minutes. Granted you don’t want it to be a miserable day. On days when it is easy to get outside, take the opportunity. Even a little bit of time, like 15-20 minutes, can make you feel much happier about yourself.

6. Cook Something

It is important to cook at least one meal or have one meal at home. It can be easy to get things delivered to your doorstep now more than ever these days for most people. But having that sense of pride is important. Knowing that you contributed in some way to making the food you are going to eat can boost your self-esteem. It can make you feel good about yourself along the way.

7. Check In with Someone

I live alone. It’s important to check in with someone. Let them know you are there, and things are going well for you. It can also help them too by letting them know you are there for them and care about them too.

8. Most of all, love yourself and give yourself grace.

This can be one of the hardest things to do for yourself. It takes time to reach an optimal state. You won’t get there overnight if you have struggled with mental health as much as I have. Living independently also takes time. It is important to love yourself. Be patient with yourself when taking care of yourself for the first time. Understanding how to live independently can be challenging. Dealing with challenges in that process is part of the journey.
