This morning there was a front-page article in the local paper about the misconceptions of being autistic.
There has been a lot of senseless rhetoric going around in the media about what autistic people can’t do.
That can’t be further from the truth, as there are many autistic people that are capable of doing many things.
Sometimes they need to have various supports and accommodations.
There should be nothing wrong with needing such. They should not be the first thing to go when government entities are looking at reducing services for the vulnerable.
It is often important remember that autism is a spectrum disorder.
Everyone experiences challenges in their own ways.
Their support needs will vary in their own way.
There is no “one-size fits all ” approach. It has to be tailored to the individual.
Over time, it is the goal for that need to diminish once the skill set attained.
But that is not always the case.
I am not ashamed that I still need supports in some ways.
And I am glad to have them along with being proud of having to use them.
It’s what keeps me going when there has been a long doubt about doing so.
Last week I wondered what life would look like if I had not gone down the path I went down. It didn’t look that prosperous.
I am grateful for all the opportunities that I have. I know that I too have responsibilities. I must meet these responsibilities to keep the success going.
Yes, I am plenty capable of doing many things, including contributing to society.
