In an autistic person’s life, we often want things to go the way that we want to. However, there are times when it is not possible, and it is necessary to go with the order of operations that are prescribed. It can be frustrating; however, it is important to not react towards others because they did not meet your needs. Think about how much it really matters to you and then and only then if it really matters, advocate for it as it is only proper to do so.
There are many choices that are made throughout the day that can be challenging to accept when they do not go the way that we intend them to go. It may not be totally understandable why decisions are made that do not put our needs at the forefront of why we need to the center of attention or why when they look easy, they cannot be done in a way that looks simple to us. There are sometimes reasons that we are not privy to know why a decision is made a certain way that may seem as we are being ignored. However, as hard as it can seem, it is important to go with the flow and be the best that you can be to not make things worse than what they are.
Yes, for the autistic person, we experience things in a different way than our neurotypical counterparts and it cannot always be explained in simple terms why things are more intense for us and why our needs should be prioritized. In fact, there could be many reasons of many with all sorts of challenges regardless of neurotype that need to be met. While ours are not often physical in nature, it is best to have whatever coping device, mechanism, or strategy in our possession so we can get through whatever challenging situation that we meet in our path so we can go with the flow and be the person that others expect us to be.
The last thing that anyone expects of us is that we react to a situation that those serving us may not understand the mechanisms associated with the way that we are responding to the stimuli by which we are affected. It just prolongs the process for all involved in the flow of the daily operations and if we ourselves investigate and find ways that work for us to get through what we can find challenging instead of continually fighting for our needs to be prioritized and met, then it is easier to just go with the flow and not be a fighter against it.
Not everyone in our path is going to “get” who we are and why we as autistic people operate the way that we do. It is important to make things go as easily as we can so we can go with the flow and as easy as it can to want to put our needs first, sometimes it can’t always be that way and we as autistic individuals must learn how to properly cope with the challenging situations that are included with the daily flow so we do not hinder the situation any further and cause additional havoc among everyone that is involved with the flow of the situation that we must all face in our paths of daily living.
