Lately, I have been learning about the ‘tools in my toolbox’.
Not a physical toolbox, per se, rather a mental wellness toolbox.
Tools that can help me when I come across challenges in my path.
I know I need to have them, because there are going to be times when things are irritating or challenging, therefore I need to dig into my ‘toolbox’ to find the right tools to help me be the person that I need to be.
Most days it involves headphones and music. Sometimes it is more things like sunglasses or coping strategies and defense mechanisms I can deploy to regulate myself until I am able to get out of the situation.
Then after, it is important to practice self-care. Whether that is eating, hydrating, taking a nap or having a shower or whatever it may be, I am learning more about what helps me more every day.
I must also build boundaries by focusing on the things that are in my control and not focusing on the things that are out of my control.
I can be more flexible than what I think I can be. Sometimes other people cannot and thrive off routine and reassurance.
I must realize that I must do what I need to do to remain calm and not match or react to their energy as it only makes my feelings more complex.
It has taken me a long time to be able to manage life the way that it is. I must not lower myself to a point less than such.
That is why it is important to have the tools in my toolbox to ensure that things are in place when I need to focus on taking care of myself, making my mental health my priority.
