One trait of being autistic that is not often talked about in the mainstream media is one’s mindfulness or lack of mindfulness to their noise pollution in the area that they surround. It is something that I have had to battle from time to time at various levels of intensity in my lifetime.
The most common thing about this trait is the fact that the autistic person is sensitive to sound, yet they are not mindful of their own noise pollution. While this may or may not be able to be controlled on their ability due to their cognitive level, it is one trait that I personally had to experience from time to time. It can be scolding when you must be corrected when you are trying to make your voice heard.
Likewise, there can be instances where traits such as walking on the individual’s toes can come into play because of their sensitivity to not want to omit too much noise in their surroundings. While this behavior is totally the opposite of the behavior of being too loud, it too can have a factor where one is too sensitive to the noise pollution surrounding them.
Regardless, when one is sensitive to the sounds of others, and one is not cognizant of their own sound that they must grasp a sense of reality and understand that they must be mindful when times dictate for them to do so. There can be several factors where their own noise pollution can omit an excessive amount of noise that can be too sensitive for those that surround them, thus at times they could be hastily corrected for their actions.
As autistic people, we like to follow rules. One pragmatical or sometimes written rule is the fact that we must be mindful of our noise pollution. This can be at times hard to grasp because we are not often mindful of the noises that we omit, and this can result at times when conflicts can arise. It can at times be the making or breaking point of things being successful for them.
Likewise, when one is so sensitive it can greatly interfere with their daily life because they are so anxious about the noise that they omit that it can be continually on their mind and be consuming to the other things that are important to them or may need more attention than the noise that they produce.
It is a continual battle that must be fought in the autistic mind. You are constantly thinking as to whether you’re being too loud or not. Yes, there are those times when you are passionate about things, and you want to get your point across or you’re at a bliss of enjoyment and you’re at times hastily corrected about the noise that they are you are omitting, thus reactivating kickstarting the gears of anxiety into overdrive.
Nonetheless, it is important to have firm, concrete expectations of when various noise levels are permitted to be omitted Yes, there are times when it is not going to be perfect. The focal point is when the nose omitted becomes too overpowering or when being too sensitive to their noise level interferes with their daily life. Not all autistic individuals may be able to understand when to follow these expectations so it may become necessary to bring it to their level of cognitive ability so it can something that may have the possibility of making life manageable for everyone.
