There comes a time when it becomes necessary when you must modify your routine to conform with the way things have changed in life that are beyond your control. As an autistic person, it can be challenging to acquire that there is a new routine that must be followed, but within time, it becomes second nature to oneself.

The daily operation of life is never the same. Eventually in life it is going to become necessary that oneself is going to have to change their routine to conform with a bigger change that is out of their control. It may mean starting your day earlier or holding something you enjoy off until later. It may also mean having as much as you can prepared the night before or even having to have a bigger cushion to accommodate for something that cannot be controlled.

It may also be necessary to understand being patient when it comes to having to wait for something to happen like a ride somewhere else. Sometimes you must realize that there cannot be a concrete time that something is due to arrive, and it will require you to be flexible by being as ready as you can be before the window of expectancy. Being patient may not be a strong suit for many autistic individuals and it can be challenging to be patient and know exactly when something is going to arrive.

Change is especially difficult for autistic individuals. There may be some pushback and resistance to a change that oneself may have some reservations in happening. It may be hard to understand how something is going to happen when there is no clarity of how exactly it is going to happen. This can be especially challenging when transitioning from something that one has known its predictability for an extended period.

When the change happens, it’s going to take some getting used to and there will need to be some flexibility within oneself to accept that it will take some time for them to modify their routine to adjust to the new situation. Nothing is a guarantee at first and it will take time and things are going to happen that may seem out of place until all involved become familiar with you and your needs.

Patience, although not always a strong suit in autistic individuals, is a must when experiencing a change to something that is unfamiliar to them. From experience, it can be one of the most challenging skills to have when all else in the world seems to be falling apart. To the autistic individual, experiencing something that is unfamiliar to you may seem like the worst possible thing, especially if the change comes with a great need to modify their routine and there is unpredictability involved.

Having to modify a routine to meet one’s needs can be challenging, especially if there has been a lot of rigidity of predictability to the prior routine. Having to do something that requires oneself to have be patient and have a willingness to be flexible with what they need to do before, during and after the experience can be difficult to understand and accept, but there are often times when there are external elements of things we cannot control and in order to have something that is necessary to us, we must endure something that is difficult, including providing the opportunity to  have to modify one’s routine to meet that change.

Being willing to accept that there has to be flexibility with one’s routine when there are things outside of their locus of control will require patience on everyone’s part, but by at least being patient and allowing the person involved to be comfortable and endure the change with the grace and dignity that they need to have by having things explained to them as they need to will ease the transition in the entire process. It will take everyone to be patient in a routine modification, but patience and kindness will go a long way.
