Being autistic in this world can certainly come with its challenges. The way that you are perceived by others can be challenging when an autistic person is not able to mask themselves or be able to act in a fair manner in the world and this can cause struggles at times that can be very challenging.
As an autistic person that lives independently, it is always important to be cognizant of the way that you are communicating with others in a calm and collected manner. Not doing so can become inefficient and cause great concerns for the safety of others. It can also change the way that others perceive you and could cause a greater concern of wanting to associate with you out of fear of their personal safety.
While things can at times be scary for an autistic person, it is imperative to remain calm. It may also be challenging, like it is in me to be told to “relax” or “calm down” because we are being seen as the person in the wrong, even though it is probably best to take a little breather before addressing the issue in question. Being able to communicate effectively can also be a challenge because there can be a lot of difficult factors that can compromise the ability to be able to communicate honestly.
However, it is important for the autistic person to understand that having an elevated voice will only in many cases cause the issue at hand to become more elevated and more challenging to deescalate from. Coming from experience, while it may become difficult to decompress and deescalate when all you often want to do is to have the situation at hand be over, it cannot always be that way and that is not the answer that autistic people want to hear.
Nonetheless, it is essential for the autistic person to remain as calm and use as normal noise level as they can to communicate their needs to those communicating to them. It is also important to understand that at times when we are asked to step outside of our comfort zone as an autistic person, it can be anxious and scary to do so. But, remaining calm and collected and explaining what is needed for you to do what is requested successfully to have the needs met of the requesting party. Fighting it or making other unnecessary or elevated statements will only cause things to become more escalated for all those involved and can be further consequential to the autistic person because of not thinking things through.
To the autistic mind, we often like to do things that are comfortable to us, but there must always be an understanding that the world cannot always promise us the things that find us the comfort, routine, etc. we desire. There are going to be times that we are going to have to get out of our comfort zone and do things that may seem uncomfortable to autistic people, but you cannot knock it unless there is a potential that you can try it.
When these things are told to an autistic person, they often do not want even to hear of a possible change that could occur that may be uncertain to them or cause increased anxiety. However, it is important to remain calm, educate yourself and be aware of the process that it involves so it can put your mind a little more at ease. Nothing is ever guaranteed in life, therefore there may need to be contingencies on a personal level for oneself to be able to cope with something that may be bothering them. It is also important to communicate in the best way that you can and as calmly as possible so all your concerns are addressed to be aware of something that may be changing for you.
As autistic people, sometimes we must be told or hear things that make us anxious or upset, but how you handle yourself in the situation is imperative to making sure you are able to stay regulated.
