There are times in our lives that as much as we want to be able to change things, we just can’t do that. We must accept things even as they may be challenging for us and manage them the best as we can because we have to accept that we do not always have control of everything in our lives.
Change for many is hard, Change accompanied with a challenging situation is more complex for autistic individuals because it is often coupled with crippling anxiety and fear. It is a living life feeling as if we have no control of the situation at hand. We also sometimes think about the worst possible scenarios in the challenges we face or that our sense of safety is compromised by the things that are beyond our scope of control. There are times that I for certain would like to be able to control or be able to avoid the things that feel uncomfortable to me, but I have learned that is not always possible.
It can be easy to run away from the things that seem scary or challenging to us. It is often the first thought that comes to mind and we often think it without realizing the full situation at hand. The only thing I think about is getting out of something at that very moment seems uncomfortable for me to bear. At the given moment all I want is to feel like I have some sense of control or safety in the situation. Over the years, I have had to accept the fact that I don’t always have the ability at that given moment to control something. However, I can do my best to manage the challenges that are faced with the situation at hand.
The reality is that I often catastrophize and think of the worst things that can happen in the given situation or challenge at hand. My brain doesn’t allow me to process some of the things that are beneficial in a given situation, rather it only lets me see the challenges that I can face in a situation, which drives a sense of flight-driving anxiety, causing me to want to avoid a situation because of an amplified fear of change. Many people, whether they are autistic or not, are very resistant to change because we are oftentimes creatures of habit and fear the challenges that a change may bring forth.
Sometimes, choices and decisions are made out of our control and we must face reality. Reality can be hard to see through all the fear that is protruding in front of your field of vision. The thoughts of things actually being better in the end can be blocked because we fear making a change and giving things a chance to work out for what they need to,. It can be hard to give things a chance to work out because we are often impatient and want an instant remedy to the fear that is driving in our brains and this prevents us from seeing what can actually be a good thing in the end.
It can be hard to face reality and realize that you must endure the challenge that you have to face. Sometimes, you want to avoid something because it is uncomfortable for you to withstand but as I have learned many times in my life, if you give things a chance, they will oftentimes work out for the better. In the moment, you are not thinking that, but you have to give things a chance to work out and eventually you will wonder why something wasn’t thought of years ago or how you lived without something being what it became. It can be hard to see that, but guarantee me, I have faced many things in life that I never thought would happen and they turned out great for me.
