This past weekend, I went on an outing with my day program to the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. I learned that they participate in the KultureCity Sensory Inclusion Initative.

At the gate, they provide sensory bags that contain a headset, fidget toys and other relatable items. They also have weighted lap pads. You can interconnect to the needs and experiences by downloading the Kulture City App on either the AppStore or Google Play. There you can find social stories, information and other tools for the sensory challenged.

I did see some signs for to notify those with sensory challenges where ear protection may be needed including the Tropical Forest Building. Additionally, between it and the Safari Plaza (food area) was a quiet zone.

Additionally, there are multiple Family Restrooms (although no Adult Changing Stations)

  • Sarfari Plaza (Food Area)
  • Theatre (Admission Required)
  • Waters Edge.

Finally, there is a drop off for the loaner sensory items at the bottom of the ramp at the entry gate.
