As an autistic person, I often root myself in things that happen. I remember them and how they affected me and those around me. But I have had to learn to let go of bringing up past events. I used to believe something isn’t good or can’t happen as proposed because of past experiences. Sometimes, past ways can drive things to be worse. I have learned that some of the things are not worth repeating and need to be let go of.

Having a history of what happened can serve as a tool sometimes. Still, there are also times when it has no purpose. It sometimes takes remembering that it happened and we can’t change it. Yet new things can happen. There can be potential with things being or seen in a different perspective. While I want to cling on what was, I know that there is benefits of trying and doing things differently. When changes have been proposed in the past, my anxiety wanted me to believe that it would not work. Yet it turned out to be the best thing that happened to ease a lot of my anxiety.

Seeing that example helps us understand. We don’t have to continue old habits. We don’t need to do something just because we did it for decades. That was the way it always was. In reality, the way things were done tore us apart more than we dare to believe. We should let go of what we believed had to be. Accepting changes is hard, but necessary. It’s important to give things a chance to work. We shouldn’t let our anxiety control us. Just because it was one way in the past doesn’t mean it has to be that way now. We need to recognize that things are different now.

I used to believe things couldn’t change because of past experiences. I thought people and things were stagnant. But, I’ve realized they can make changes and improve for the better. There are opportunities to show ability and move past earlier events. The past is a part of what no longer exists. Building connections and showing that things are different now is essential. It’s also knowing that learning to adapt to the current time is not going to be perfect. Mistakes can happen. Once things become easier to navigate, we learn to adapt to what is. We should not allow ourselves to dwell on what has happened.

We can find some value in the past. We must differentiate between what didn’t serve us and what did. It’s important to let change exist as it is now. We need to understand that things can’t always be what we want. We learn to adapt to the current. We learn to rebuild ourselves from the past. This requires letting go of what didn’t serve us before while striving for a better future.
