Over the past several months, I have begun to explore more beyond what mainstream media finds as entertainment. There are still some new forms of entertainment that make me chuckle. Yet, the things I was exposed to as a child, teenager, and early adult keep me more grounded. They help me stay away from temptation or inappropriate behavior.

There is nothing wrong with the way that I and many others on the autism spectrum find interesting. Many find it odd. Yet, it is the way that we are often wired to think. It can keep us regulated. The world today can be in such chaos for our minds. It often brings us the peace and harmony we need to get through both good and bad days. It removes all the bad feelings we can experience.

Often others want to judge us for being different. They criticize us for having interests that differ from those typical for our age or stage in life. Without a doubt, I have experienced a fair amount of bullying while growing up. Yet, as we both matured, those same peers reconciled with me. Even those that were the cruelest to me as a tween have seen me mature into who I am. They still connect online and have even helped me along the way.

It is because of the way that I see the world that I understand those like me. I understand why they are the way they are. This makes me more understanding of them. I never criticize anyone for what they like to do or what they are interested in. I know these interests can make or break them when they’re at a low point in their life. I have often been told that you never know what anyone is going through. This is often true for autistic individuals.

I am truly grateful for the ability to experience the world in the way that I do. It can be times what makes or breaks my day from being either good or bad. It keeps me well. It helps me avoid getting involved in other issues that can be stressful for me. I had to recognize what I needed to do to protect myself. This is crucial when I am most vulnerable. I am enticed by things that will only cause more strife in me.

It can be truly difficult to understand why someone would like the things they like. It can be further complicated when it comes to something that just doesn’t make sense to you. But if you take the time to see and understand why, you realize it helps keep them under control. The last thing you want is for them to have a meltdown. It can be embarrassing for both of you. It can also be challenging. It’s best not to judge and to let them live their lives in the moment.
