In all the common spaces I occupy, I had always felt like I had to want to fit in. But over time, I realized that I was not getting the outcome I wanted by doing so. I had to start to accept that not everyone or everything is meant for me. I realized that I don’t have or need to fit in everywhere I go. I understand that I stand out in my own way in my time.
Social construct is not always easy to understand. This is especially true when other people are involved. It can be hard to know exactly what you are welcome to be a part of or not. Sometimes it can be hard to understand that not everyone or everything is not for your consumption or attention. While it is slowly getting better, I understand that things are prone to happen. Ultimately, it’s up to me to decide when to pay attention to what is needed. Not everything requires a response. It’s more beneficial to keep to myself than feel awkward about unresolved situations.
I believe I have become more comfortable in social situations. Still, there are still challenges that come with the places I visit. These challenges can be difficult to digest when they do not go the way I would like them to. Understanding that there are expectations to be followed is important. It’s perfectly acceptable to fit in with different circles when necessary. Often, it’s proper to speak only when a response is requested. Sometimes, it means staying to yourself and avoiding certain situations. Trying to be a part of something not meant for you can make things worse.
I have better confidence in knowing that there are situations where I am accepted and liked for who I am. There are times when I am wanted and appreciated for contributing to things. I understand that it is proper to follow all social norms and pragmatics when expected. Additionally, there are different levels or circles of friendships. In these circles, there are different types of conversations that are socially accepted.
Sometimes, you must fight your feelings and social inclination to always want to be part of something. Instead, be willing to pay attention to what is best for you. Avoid merely chasing the expectations of the world to fall in line with what is expected. There have been many times when I have stepped out of bounds or crossed lines that shouldn’t have been crossed. Feeling left out makes me realize I need to adapt. Bringing awkward feelings to situations shows the need to change my delivery to the time and place. I understand that not having the desired level of connection is perfectly normal. It’s up to me to work towards finding things that improve those situations. I can achieve this by making and keeping the connections I want. I can do this by being consistent with my well-being and connections. I strive to meet expectations when and where I go.
