I am beginning to think about something. As an autistic adult now in middle age, I feel blessed. My family has shown me the importance of trying things when they are offered, instead of taking a hard pass. Often, autistic people struggle when faced with things they do not like. Additionally, the activities they enjoy not be available. But my loved ones and firm educators showed hard dedication. Through their persistence, I learned to be willing to take a step out of the comfort zone. I also became willing to do the uncomfortable. I learned to be flexible when the times called for it.
Autistic people are known for being more sensitive than our neurotypical peers. This sensitivity can make it harder for them to withstand certain situations. They are also unaware of what is happening. As a society, we have made significant progress in educating our autistic population. This education prepares them for the myriads of experiences they face in their lives. But there are still times when challenges arise. Some things are not accessible when we need them. Over time, I have learned that being prepared is essential. Knowing my options is crucial. This helps me get through moments when there are things I am totally not willing to withstand.
Sometimes it is not socially acceptable to bring what we need. We do not know what is being offered at an event. These situations we must go through. As hard as it is, it is important to be willing to take a chance when necessary. You should ask questions or educate yourself as you can. This is especially true when going through something you are a little more sensitive to or unwilling to do. Granted, it can be hard when the world around us as autistic folk is too much for us. When that happens, it can be appropriate to escape to a safe place. This allows you to refocus and do what is needed to withstand challenges.
Over time, I have also understood something important. I must be the one to do things more on my own. That means I have to self-advocate in the proper way when things become too much. I also need something a little special for me when doing things that can be too much for me. Being honest with those you fear can hurt. It also hurt with those who do not understand you. Nonetheless, as I have often been taught, it never hurts unless you ask for something. This is especially true when it is something you need.
There is no shame in asking for something you need. It has been hard sometimes. This is especially true when the people you have to ask for help. Often, they are there to help you. They do not know what is going on. They will not know you need help unless you bring it to their attention. People have come into my life whom I know I can go to for support. This has made it easier over time.
In the end, it takes letting down your personal guard a little bit. You have to be willing to take a chance to try something new. You need to ask for a break or seek help with something. Granted, this has not been easy for me. Over time, I am getting warmer at the idea. I know how important it is to practice taking care of myself. This way, I can be my best self as I mature more into my life.
