The 6-year-old boy who died after being hit by a school bus Wednesday was identified Thursday as Raul Espinosa by the Milwaukee County medical examiner’s office.
The accident occurred at 3:50 p.m. at S. Cesar Chavez Drive and W. Mineral St. Police said a southbound school bus driven by a 24-year-old woman from Milwaukee struck Raul, who was crossing Cesar Chavez Drive.
The boy had severe autism and ran from his house without his adult caregivers knowing about it, according to the medical examiner. He then entered a crosswalk against a red light and was hit by the bus.
The boy died at the scene and the driver is cooperating with authorities, police said. The driver’s identity has not been released.
Initial reports that no students were on the bus were not accurate, a police spokesman said Thursday. There were two students on the bus at the time of the crash, and they were not injured, Lt. Mark Stanmeyer said.
Stanmeyer added that, as with all fatal crashes, the investigation will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County district attorney’s office once it is complete.
